Abrasives Lesson 14: Non Metallic Grinding and Finishing

Lesson 14

Non-Metallic Grinding and Finishing

What is it - it is the grinding, beveling, dimensioning, and finishing of glass, rubber, stone, brick, ceramics, and plastics. The primary products used on the above are silicon carbide belts in waterproof and non-waterproof X weight cotton and polyester materials.

Glass - usually ground wet, to eliminate the problem of dust and reduce the risk of burning or breaking the glass. Fine grit silicon carbide abrasives and special cork products are used for final polishing.

Rubber - depending on the type of rubber will determine whether it will be ground wet or dry. Soft rubbers and polyurethanes are difficult to grind satisfactorily unless they are ground wet. Most other types and hard rubbers are usually ground dry.

Thermoplastics - should be ground wet to increase the efficiency of the belt, reduce burning or melting, and improve the finish.

Thermosetting Plastics - can be either ground wet or dry depending upon the type of plastic, however wet grinding will increase belt life and finish on thermosetting plastics.
